What is Dominance Or Submission?

Dominance and submission (D/s) is the broad umbrella under which many power-exchange kinks live. In a D/s dynamic, one partner consensually takes on a more controlling, directive role (the dominant), while the other chooses to yield, obey, or serve (the submissive). The appeal is in the exchange of power: having someone to guide you, or someone who trusts you enough to follow your lead.

D/s can be full-time or limited to scenes. It might involve rituals like kneeling, specific titles (such as Sir, Ma’am, or Mistress), rules about behavior, or protocol around how to speak and move. Responsibilities can include daily check-ins, task lists, or systems of rewards and punishments. For some, the dynamic is soft and nurturing; for others, it is strict and formal.

Consent is the foundation. Submission is something offered, not taken, and dominants carry the responsibility to use power ethically and attentively. Negotiation covers what areas of life D/s touches (bedroom only, household, social events, etc.), what limits exist, and how to pause or end the dynamic if needed.
