What is Objectification?

Objectification play involves treating a consenting partner as an object rather than a person—within the agreed boundaries of a scene. The objectified partner might become a footstool, a human table, a display mannequin, or a sex toy, with restrictions on movement, speech, or eye contact. The purpose is to explore dehumanization in a controlled way, finding erotic charge in being used or using someone as a thing.

For some, being objectified provides a deep sense of surrender. They no longer need to make choices or speak; they simply exist for their partner’s purposes. For others, objectifying a partner taps into powerful feelings of control and ownership. The aesthetic can be glamorous, clinical, or harsh, depending on how the scene is framed.

Because objectification touches on identity and worth, aftercare and reassurance are particularly important. Negotiation should include what roles and language are acceptable, what actions are off-limits, and how long the scene will last. It can be helpful to have rituals that clearly mark the end of object status and the return to being a cherished partner. When done ethically, objectification play can be an intense exploration of power, vulnerability, and the meaning we place on personhood.
